A Day At the ER

Ah, what a day.  We spent the evening at UPMC Passavant ER.   Apparently Zach might have had a seizure while playing at the playground after school, but while he was climbing over a fence.  So he passed out and fell off the fence onto concrete. It wasn't a really high fence, maybe shoulder-level - typical chainlink fence.  He said he didn't want to walk around it so he was going to climb over it.  Strange that he would have a seizure in the afternoon though.  There's an after-school Y program at the elementary so the playground instructor was the one who saw what happened.  John said he was in the car. Asia was playing at another side of the playground. She said she saw Zach fall but that was it.  So John rushed Zach to the ER and I met him there.  Then just lots of waiting and waiting.  The doctors put a little neckbrace on him and told him to lie as flat as possible. Since he was conscious and talking and no bleeding, it seemed not to be too critical.  So we waited. John left at around 5 PM to take Asia to her trumpet lesson. And we waited.  Then a nurse practictioner dropped by and we talked about what happened. Of course, since I wasn't there when it happened, I could only relay what I had heard. Zach confirmed that he was climbing the fence and next thing he knew, he was lying on the ground.  No neck pain, just a nice goose-egg at the back of his head. Just to be safe, he went in for a CT scan.  Luckily it came back with no problems from the fall.  Poor Zach was pretty nauseous. That's the only thing he didn't like.  He had a little bit of a headache, but it's that nausea thing that really brought him to tears.   He's now back in bed, and will probably miss school tomorrow. He was talking about some papers he needed to do for school. Silly kid thought he was going to go to school tomorrow?   Asia did her homework in the ER waiting room.  She said her job today was to keep her daddy calm.  That was my job too.  Can't have the parents freaking out - it affects the kids.  What a night!
